WanDilson > This was my first trip to Washington, in the summer of 2004. I'm creating this particular album two summers later, so some of these may be out of order and I can't remember all the details exactly, but the only person that will realize that is Nate. Oh well. Also, while putting this album together I realized that my photographic skills have come a loooong way, because most of these pictures suck. So bear that in mind as you peruse the album. Anywho, on this trip we went to the Olympic Coast first, where the plan was to hike about 13 miles to a place called Shi Shi Beach. The first three miles went through the forest on a boardwalk like this one here.
WanDilson > The deer were extremely skiddish and avoided people at all cost.
WanDilson > There's Nate next to the biggest piece of driftwood I've ever seen. I'd like to see the storm that washes something like that up on the beach.
WanDilson > Once we got to the beach, the first mile or so was over some fairly easy terrain, mostly hard packed sand. Because of that, we figured it was going to be a fairly easy hike. We were in for quite a surprise...
WanDilson > After a few miles along the beach we came to the mouth of the Ozette River, which is where this picture is taken from. Our final destination for the day was on the other side of that point way off in the distance, which is called Point of the Arches, and is one of the prettier places I've seen. Since we had gotten off to such a late start, however, we had to hurry, because some of the headlands you can only get around at low tide, and we didn't really want to get trapped by the tides if at all possible.

WanDilson > Here's one of the headlands we had to get around. At high tide, all of those rocks are underwater, so you can't get around some of the points. So you have to wait till low tide to get around them, but the going is still pretty slow because you're basically jumping from rock to rock to rock. I think we averaged about a quarter mile per hour around these things.
WanDilson > We got to see a bunch of cool wildlife in all of the tidepools too, which I don't get to see much of in good ol' o-hi-o. Here's a purple starfish (pretty sure that's the scientific name for it). We also saw some orange ones, and some sea anemones, or however you spell it. There were also these little crabs all over the rocks that would sometimes scurry across a rock right as you were about to land on it, and sometimes there'd be an audible crunch when you landed. I always felt bad and apologized, even though it was a tad too late.
