WanDilson > Once everybody got in to Salt Lake City (at about 11:00 PM hippie time), we jumped in our rental car (Jeep Grand Cherokee) and were on our way. Since the Maze area is so desolate, we had to pick up all of our provisions for the entire 8 days we'd be down there, which we intended to do at the Walmart nearest the Maze. We were told of one that was open 24-7, but when we got there we found out they didn't open till 6 AM. Since it was only 3 AM, we decided to catch some z's in a horse pasture near the Walmart parking lot. This is a picture of Mark and I while I was changing into warmer clothes. I'd know him for all of three hours at this point, so I figured it was time we got familiar with each other. Oh, by the way, four days before this picture was taken, I was diagnosed with pneumonia. I also pulled a back muscle during a coughing fit that same day. So backpacking for a week seemed like a good idea.
WanDilson > We were told by the rental company that our Jeep wasn't allowed to be taken off-road. We then proceeded to drive it over 160 miles off-road, 80 miles of which was like no driving I had ever even imagined. This is the Flint Trail, which we thought was pretty tough at first. We were in for a big surprise.
WanDilson > We basically drove down the side of a canyon. The word "road" can mean so many things, can't it?

WanDilson > Here's Nate doing some driving. The two passengers had to constantly get out and scout the best path or stack rocks so we wouldn't tear off the muffler (although we did put quite a few dents in it). There's a video of this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jVUevRRo-g
WanDilson > Driving will never, ever be the same after that trip. Half the time you couldn't see over the hood, and I lost count of how many times I thought I was going to flip the damn thing. Driving 5 feet away from a 50 foot cliff will get the heart racing, too.
WanDilson > After getting about 2 hours of miserable sleep in the horse pasture followed by a full day of the most intense driving you can imagine, we decided to call it a day. We pitched our tents about 1/4 mile from the road (even though we were supposed to go a full mile) on top of 'cryptobiotic soil', which we weren't even supposed to walk on, let alone sleep on. Having driven for over three hours through that stuff myself though, I was completely wiped out.
WanDilson > Here's Nate brushing his teeth before bed. Luckily for us, a thunderstorm blew in and the wind whipped our tents around the entire night. The wind was so strong that it ripped my tent stakes out, so I literally had to lie in my tent with my arms and legs spread out to keep my tent from blowing away with me in it. It was spectacular.
WanDilson > The next day we did a little more driving but then finally got to get out and go for a hike. Here are Nate and Mark walking up a side canyon that ended up being one of the cooler slot canyons I've seen.
