WanDilson > Back to southern Utah for Spring Break '09! As usual, Nate and Mark picked the crappiest times to get into Salt Lake City, so we ended up driving all night to get to our destination, a city called Escalante. Around 5:30 a.m. we decided we were too tired to be driving in a snowstorm, so we pulled off the road in Bryce Canyon and made camp in a dry riverbed. I was taking a long exposure of the area when Nate took a picture of the tent with his camera. Turned out to be a happy accident. Notice all the white stuff on the ground. This would turn into an underlying theme of the week...
WanDilson > The next morning we awoke to mostly blue skies and some amazing scenery. The snow had already started to melt, but it added a nice touch to the already beautiful area.
WanDilson > It was pitch black when we pulled off the road and we were dead tired, so we didn't notice this sign until morning. Whoops.
WanDilson > We woke up around 10 and drove the rest of the way to Escalante, then down a dirt road called Hole-in-the-Rock Road. We would spend most of the week driving up and down this dirt road, trying to find something to do. As it turns out, there's really only one thing to see off of this road: two slot canyons called Peakaboo and Spooky. But we would make due with seeing a few other sights, some of which turned out to be not terrible. We started by doing a dayhike down to Neon Canyon, which began with a slickrock ramble on a mostly-unmarked trail. Of course, this required us to utilize our route-finding skills, of which we have virtually none, which this trip once again illustrated. Also note that the sky wasn't exactly the most pleasant thing I've ever seen.
WanDilson > Although the trail was unmarked, we knew that we had to make our way towards the knob you can see off in the distance in this picture. So we set our sights on that and started walking.
WanDilson > We came across two ladies and their dogs along the way. They had spent three days down in Fence and Neon Canyons. Doing what, God only knows. I hope they had a little TV packed in with them, because there isn't a whole lot to see. The dogs were really nice though. I made out with the black and white one for a little bit.
WanDilson > Within minutes we were lost. Here Nate and Mark try to figure out where we are and the best path to where we wanted to go. We seem to have clearly defined roles by now on our trips. They navigate, I take pictures. Works for me.
WanDilson > This one is best viewed on X3. As you can see, there's a whole lot of nothing out here. But it's freakin gorgeous.
WanDilson > Nate on some slickrock.
